Tamikrest (Mali)

New album: ‘Kidal’ (March 17th 2017, Glitterbeat)

Tamikrest is known for their modern interpretation of Tuareg music, into which they incorporate dub, funk, blues, psychedelia and even art rock. The group’s name means ‘crossing’ in the language of the Kel Tamashek and is fitting for a band that successfully combines the traditional values of the nomad people, commonly called the Tuareg, with the visions and sounds they have encountered on their journeys to the stages and iPods of the world.

For years they have drawn the attention of the Western World to their endangered culture. Their new album ‘Kidal’ (Glitterbeat, March 2017), dedicated to their hometown in Northeastern Mali, deals with the increasingly serious issues there as well. War, political collapse and persecution have forced the musicians to live in exile in Algeria. While they were able to realise their musical dreams, the brutal imposition of the Sharia law has turned their families, friends and them into refugees. On ‘Kidal’, the band processes the pain of their losses, speaks up against suppression and voices their hope for resilience and freedom. The album was recorded in Bamako with producer Mark Mulholland (Tony Allen’s Afro-Haitian Experimental Orchestra) and mixed by David Odlum, who won a Grammy for his work with Tinariwen.

Their last album ‘Chatma’ (Glitterbeat, 2013), which made it onto countless Album of The Year lists of renowned magazines such as Mojo, The Quietus and The Independent, impressively described their experiences as well. ‘Chatma’ is Tamashek for ‘sister’ and the melancholic, hopeful record with poetic desert blues songs is dedicated to the Tuareg women, who have always been the backbone of the families in times of crisis. Tamikrest won ‘Best Group 2014’ at the Songlines Music Awards and demonstrated their excellent performance abilities on their live album ‘Taksera’.

In the last few years, Tamikrest took the hearts of many visitors at festivals like Flow Helsinki, Roskilde, Fusion, InMusic, Colors of Ostrava, Oya, Le Guess Who?, North Sea Jazz and Latitude by storm. Their successful ‘Kidal’ release tour with a total of 27 concerts in Berlin, London, Paris, Copenhagen and Barcelona among others thrilled fans and critics throughout Europe. Tamikrest are on top of their game and prove once again that their reputation as one of West Africa’s most innovative bands is well-deserved!

Press commentaries

‚Tinariwen’s kid brothers they may be, but Ousmane Ag Mossa’s band always seemed a far better rock’n’roll proposition, an impression boosted by their fouth studio album. […] Exactly the sort of angry erbel rock you want from a band with their backs to the wall and foes on all sides.’ – Mojo

‘It’s hard to believe that there are many bands in contemporary Western rock music who could shake your bones harder. […] Perhaps it’s reflective of the struggle of a people whose normadic way of life is under constant threat, but Tamikrest’s music blazes with a righteous intensity that is almost scary.’ – Songlines

‘It’s the growly vocals and electric guitar that characterise the sound. But Tamikrest have a more psychedelic tinge, some female backing vocals and rely less on those camel-gait rhythms.’ – London Evening Standard

‘Tamikrest have a curious ability to groove and chill at the same time with singing, guitar and djembe […], drawing you into the intimacy of their performance.’ – fRoots

‘Tamikrest are the brightest young contenders among the new Tamashek-speaking desert blues bands mixing traditional styles with elements of indie rock.’ – The Guardian

‘Hypnotic nomad rock, best at its most subtle.’ – Timeout London

‘Plenty of heft and juicy reverb, the loping drone of lead and twin rhythm guitars redolent of a spacey, hypnotic Seventies rock ambience.’ – The Independent
