Nigel Kennedy plays Jimi Hendrix
Bach meets My World
Current album: My World (Edel, December 2016)
Nigel Kennedy, the punk of the classical violinists, established his reputation as a crossover artist with many different programs and musical genres. His virtuosity and energy gave new impulses to classical music as well as modern music like klezmer, jazz and rock.
In 2016 Kennedy played in the almost sold-out Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, as a headliner at Germany’s biggest hippie festival Burg Herzberg, and between these worlds on the opening weekend at Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with his interpretations of Jimi Hendrix. He is on tour again in 2017, playing the Maggyart Festival in Elba (IT) among others.
His project Nigel Kennedy plays Jimi Hendrix is dedicated to one of the greatest masters of rock: Jimi Hendrix, a composer whom Kennedy keeps returning to. For almost 25 years Kennedy has been performing various works of him regularly whether with classical orchestra, small acoustic groups or with his regular band.
With Bach meets My World Nigel Kennedy takes the audience on an exhilarating journey from baroque to contemporary music, incorporating influences of classical, jazz, celtic, folk, and rock. His unique talent and mass appeal have brought fresh perspectives to both the classical and contemporary repertoire.
His new album My World (Edel) was released in December 2016 and offers the most intimate view into his world so far. The works are inspired by the violinist’s mentors Yehudi Menuhin, Isaac Stern or Stéphane Grappelli as well as artists like Mark O’Connor and Jarek Śmietana. The album shows how these encounters influenced his musical understanding and his career as an artist.
‚[…] virtuosity intact, the sound compelling, the effect totally disarming’ – The Guardian
‘an epic, meandering journey from baroque to hard rock’ – The Times
