Current Album: XX (Glitterbeat, January 2017)
Formed in Istanbul in 1996 by Levent Akman and Murat Ertel, Baba ZuLa only just celebrated their 20 year anniversary by releasing their compilation album XX!
Baba Zula has worked with artists like Jaki Liebezeit (Can), Dr. Das (Asian Dub Foundation) and Mad Professor (Massive Attack, Lee Perry). In the last 20 years Baba Zula performed live in Tokyo, New York City, New Delhi, Sao Paulo and Kazakhstan as well as at European festivals like Roskilde (DK), Printemps de Bourges (FR), Flow Festival (FI), Fusion (GER), Paleo Festival (CH) and many more. In early 2017 they rocked the stages with their successful ‘Do Not Obey’ release tour, playing shows at SO36 Berlin and the sold out Kampnagel in Hamburg amongst others.
BaBa ZuLa not only appeared in Bear award winning director Fatih Akin’s film ‘Crossing the Bridge’, which explores the sounds of Istanbul, but they also provided the music for the film by recording with Einstüerzende Neubauten’s Alexander Hacke.
The oriental dub band goes to great lengths to provide their fans with a unique live show experience. Their ritual like performances are a mixture of art and often feature belly dancers, elaborate costumes, poetry, theatre and live drawing, delivering a tantalizing audio-visual feast. Mixing oriental instruments such as the darbuka, electric saz, and spoons with electronics and modern sounds, BaBa ZuLa create their own individual sound called Istanbul psychedelia. It’s influenced by present-day Istanbul as much as by the Anatolian days and Turkish musical roots going as far back as pre-Islamic, shamanic times. Despite sounds that might initially come to mind when one hears a phrase like “Oriental Dub”, Baba ZuLa’s music is in fact psychedelic Istanbul rock’n roll that rolls in a way that westerners haven’t heard so frequently since the late ’60s rock era. They are the unrivalled masters of 21st century Turkish psychedelic music. Baba ZuLa share their legacy with us through their music, a music born out of Istanbul and influenced by the memories of Istanbul passed on to them from generations past.
‘The band’s roots in Anatolian rock come through clearly and Murat Ertel’s electric saz is to the fore’ – Financial Times
‘A heady Turkish brew, […] by turns playful and earnest.’ – The Guardian
‘[…] songs of protest, caring, love and rock’n‘roll, created in the hands of Istanbul’s best psychedelic band of the 21st century!’ - Songlines
‘Baba Zula is unlikely to sound like anything you’ve ever heard before. Baba Zula is essential listening for anyone with an interest in world music or the outer edges of rock and psychedelia, or — ideally — both. As vital as, say, Tinariwen is for North Africa, so is Baba Zula for Turkish music.’ - Popmatters
